About Loyola Retreat House

Since 1927, thousands of Christian men and women have sought and found Jesus here. Staffed by Jesuit priests and religious women, Loyola is located in a peaceful section of Morristown, surrounded by 30 acres of beautiful lawns, gardens and woodland.

Loyola offers a time to relax, away from business problems and family worries; a time to reflect and get a fresh slant on your life; a time to pray, to reawaken the sense of the reality of God and to grow in the precious gift of faith.

The house contains 85 comfortable private rooms for retreatants, two chapels, a well-stocked library and spacious meeting rooms; everything reasonably needed for a quiet time with the Lord is at Loyola.

Our weekend retreats start on Friday evening with dinner and end on Sunday afternoon with lunch and award presentations. Retreat directors offer scripturally-based reflections for prayer and meditation each day. Relaxation, prayer and growth in awareness of the presence of the Lord all are enhanced by an atmosphere of silence.

Over and above the various scheduled retreats, Loyola offers days or evenings of prayer for adults, for school faculties, for parish societies and parish councils. These can be arranged on mutually agreeable dates and the program adapted to the needs of the particular group.

Our Mission

We wish to be companions in Christ, sharing the Ignatian apostolic vision and characterized by a primary concern for each other’s growth in the Lord in an atmosphere of mutual support and trust.

We wish to share this vision, grounded as it is upon the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, by being a center of spirituality which offers to laity, religious and clergy varied retreat experiences and other opportunities for growth in personal and communal awareness of, and commitment to, the spiritual and apostolic life of today’s Christian.

Programs

Weekend Retreats
25 groups of men and 6 groups of women visit Loyola over a weekend from early September to early June. These three days provide time for prayerful reflection in an atmosphere of peace and quiet. Talks are given, the sacraments are offered, and plenty of private time is available. Two mid-week retreats are offered also: one, for men, over Ash Wednesday, and the other, for women (“Ladies of Loyola”), in the first week in May.

Directed/Private Retreats

Throughout the course of the year, a steady stream of people come to Loyola for directed retreats. A directed retreat may be arranged on an individual basis lasting from a few days to a longer period.
This is a retreat in silence in which the retreatant is guided through a prayer experience by a personal director (“one-on-one”). The retreatant meets daily with the director to reflect upon the prayer experience and to discern in the light of that experience how to proceed. The material for prayer is primarily scriptural.

Loyola offers six-day directed retreats during the summer and also during Holy Week.
Individuals are welcomed at Loyola for private retreats at any time during the year.

Retreats for Sisters (preached)
Loyola offers five-day preached retreats for women religious during the summer. A three-day preached retreat during the Holy Week Triduum is also offered.

Retreats for Priests (preached)
Loyola returned to a long standing tradition in 1999 by offering preached retreats for priests. From Monday evening to Friday morning, reflections for prayer, office in common, and other opportunities for spiritual growth are provided for priests. Priests' preached retreats are hosted three times each year: in May, September, and October.

The Full Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola
A thirty seven day in-depth prayer experience of the full Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola is offered to lay, religious, and priests several times throughout the year. This is a “directed retreat” as described above. All interested are encouraged to apply for this unique prayer experience.

19th Annotation Retreat
This retreat, “Choosing Christ in Daily Living,” is a way of praying through the full Spiritual Exercises at home under direction over a thirty week period. The individual meets weekly with a director, but continues to live his/her regular life during this profound prayer experience.

Days of Prayer
Loyola's staff offers days of prayer for parish and other groups. Members of the staff also engage in similar ministry outside the house.
Some groups are hosted by Loyola. This means that they usually conduct their own programs, but are sometimes assisted by Loyola staff for Mass and/or Reconciliation.

Spiritual Direction
Many people (lay, religious, priests) come to Loyola for regular spiritual direction. Once or twice each month, the individual discusses his/her prayer life and experience with one of Loyola's trained and experienced directors.

Lectures/Programs
Periodically, Loyola offers series open to the general public and given by Loyola staff members: TBA.

First Fridays
For over a decade, on the nine First Fridays from October through June, all are invited to come to Loyola at 7:00 a.m. for a brief reflection for prayer followed by time for private prayer. Mass follows, and then a continental breakfast is served after which many depart for work. This is a wonderful way to keep the graces of a weekend retreat alive.Weekend Retreats

26 groups of men and 5 groups of women visit Loyola for a place of prayerful reflection over a weekend from early September to early June. Two mid-week retreats also are offered.

Matt Talbot Retreats
Loyola hosts two Matt Talbot retreats for men each year: on the first weekend in January and on the last weekend in July. These retreats, founded at Loyola by Father Collins, S.J. in 1944, are for recovering alcoholics. A beautiful statue of Matt Talbot, sculpted by Brian P. Hanlon, graces the back gardens of the retreat house.
