Retreat Theme:  Our Spiritual Life in a COVID World

Do you think the timeless treasure of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola can possibly speak to us amid the challenges of our day?

Led by Thomas Marciniak, S.J.

One unshakeable belief St. Ignatius Loyola held was that God can be encountered in our experience: in the very circumstances of our daily lives in this world, in this “whirlwind of grace.” God comes directly to men and women, and they will recognize God’s Presence if they open their hearts and minds. The whole purpose of the Spiritual Exercises is to help people experience God directly and in multiple ways to move the human heart to fulfillment. Such an encounter frees people to love wholeheartedly.

The desire for love, hope and wholeness burns in the hearts of people today just as it burned in the heart of Ignatius. Ignatius’ time had its demons, and so does ours. They may not really be so different.

The way to God that emerged from Ignatius’ own conversion can still lead us to freedom from the demons of our age: addictions, greed, emptiness of heart, despair, confusion, racism, violence and meaninglessness. Through the centuries, The Spiritual Exercises, which are at the heart of Ignatian spirituality, have been a powerful means of spiritual formation. Ignatius can be a wise and discerning companion on our own journey toward the embrace of a loving God. On the way, we can learn to say with him, “All for the greater glory of God!”

So, my dear friends in the Lord, I invite you to accompany me on a week-long journey from July 6-12. The format will be a “virtual retreat” using the wonders of Zoom. My focus will be Our Spiritual Life in a COVID World. How do we respond to the spiritual needs of a COVID world? What can help us navigate the spiritual waters of this pandemic tempest which has swept across the whole planet?

You can see a schedule below for our week-long virtual retreat. I would like to share two presentations each day with you – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning presentations will focus on Our Spiritual Life in a COVID World. For the afternoon talks I would like to present some considerations about prayer in our lives today clearing some misconceptions and offering both consolation and challenge. This will help us overcome struggles in prayer, develop a mature prayer habit and explore new prayer practices.

Trust yourself, trust God’s providence, and get ready to open your heart in such a way that you will “hear” God saying to you deep within your soul, “I love you!”

Preached retreats consist of individuals who are on their own personal retreat, but are given talks/reflections twice a day by a retreat director to prepare and orient them for their own prayer and reflection. They follow the themes of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.

Due to the pandemic, for the safety of our retreatants and staff, this retreat will only be offered VIRTUALLY.  Retreat will begin at 7:00pm on Monday, July 6 and will end after VIRTUAL Mass on Sunday, July 12 at 10:30am.  Please see the tentative schedule below.

PLEASE NOTE:  This is a SILENT RETREAT.  It is only through sacred silence that we can truly hear the voice of God speaking to our hearts.  How do we hear God’s voice?  The voice of God may be a stirring that we feel during one of the talks, a Word from Scripture, a feeling on a walk outside, etc. (Be open to how God may be speaking to you).  So please remember to take some time for sacred silence, wherever you are located, in between scheduled services on this retreat.

We miss your prayerful presence and long to welcome you back on-site as soon as we feel it is safe to do so.  Let us continue to pray for and with each other.
