The Hebrew word hesed defies an easy English translation. Lovingkindness, fierce loyalty, womblike compassion, covenant love, mercy… No matter the wording, this hesed, this mercy has been seen as the most ennobling of God’s attributes, finding its fullest expression in the life and witness of Jesus. In our retreat weekend we will explore this supreme Christian virtue, using four Gospel stories as our guide:
*Mercy as Forgiving Ourselves — The Woman Caught in Adultery
*Mercy as Forgiving Others — The Parable of the Prodigal Son
*Mercy as Healing — The Bent-over Woman
*Mercy Proclaimed with Radical Gratitude — The Woman Who Anointed Jesus
God’s name is Mercy. Through study, sharing, and prayer, we will commit once again to making that name our own.
While we will not be following the format of the traditional Preached and Directed retreats this weekend, there will be ample opportunity for personal time spent in meditation, walking in our beautiful gardens, participating in the sacrament of Reconciliation, and sharing in the Sunday Mass together.
